The Barras is an historic area with a rich entrepreneurial legacy, close to the Merchant City - Glasgow's landmark cultural quarter at the heart of the city.
The area was once a bustling market place handling a wide range of trades and home to the world-famous The Barrowlands Ballroom which is today still a thriving venue and important international icon for the city.
The Barras is now experiencing a renaissance and is quickly becoming home to a diverse range of creative industries. Designers, photographers, artists, fashion brands, digital agencies, architects, film-makers, recording studios, places to eat, nightlife venues, internationally acclaimed arts festivals and contemporary art galleries exist and work alongside existing retailers, industry and housing. This new audience have increased footfall in the area particularly due to events and exhibitions hosted by Many Studios and various other cultural and creative venues.
The Barras has benefited from investment by The Scottish Government to attract creative businesses to the area, Glasgow City Council has made a commitment to improving local infrastructure and private investors have brought new life and new use to some stunning period architecture such as St. Luke’s Church and The Pipe Factory.
