CC JOBURG | GLASGOW is a celebration of play in everyday life. Through play, we questioned issues of accessibility to the arts and perception of the arts in relation to audiences’ relationship to art work and their ownership of that viewing experience. This project began in Johannesburg, South Africa, as part of SA -UK Seasons 2014 & 2015, a partnership between the Department of Arts and Culture, South Africa and the British Council). We initially invited 3 creative practitioners to create a dedicated space for participation and play to occur in Braamfontein.
Through a collaborative process, UK-based curator Natalia Palombo (MANY Studios) and Lavendhri Arumugam, Ithuba Arts Gallery, Johannesburg explored accessibility to the arts and expectations within creative practice, measured through space and language; bringing together exciting and innovative emerging arts practitioners in the city to re-imagine, repair and reconnect the physical and social fabric of the city through the arts.
In response to that project, MANY Studios has invited Ithuba Arts curator Lavendhri Arumugam to work with Natalia Palombo to create a Glasgow response at MANY Studios. Working with the documentation gathered in Johannesburg, they will exhibit both existing and new work connecting to similar themes but in the new context of The Barras, Glasgow. As part of CC Joburg | Glasgow, we will launch a new public art work outside of MANY Studios in the heart of Barras Market.
